Due Tuesday, February 25th - Who's Your Bronte?

Directions:  Choose one of the following novels to read during our unit on the Bronte sisters.  In this blog space, please share which novel you will explore and why.  Please list a second choice, in the event I do not have enough students for all three groups.  Remember, I have links and movie trailers in the previous post to help you make your decision.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Charlotte's most famous novel depicts the emotional and spiritual development of the heroine, which is mirrored by her physical journeyings throughout the book. It describes her search for self-worth, for identity as an individual and for economic independence, in a world which did not expect such ambitions in women.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

The structure of Wuthering Heights is complex: the narrator is Lockwood, Heathcliff's shadowy tenant at Thrushcross Grange. He learns the history of the Earnshaws and the Lintons from Ellen (Nelly) Dean, who has been a servant at both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, and whose account fills most of the book. Within that story, the characters come to life and speak with their own individual voices.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bonte

The tenant is Helen Huntingdon, who, as 'Mrs Graham', arrives at the decaying Elizabethan mansion and causes gossip and rumour to spread in the neighbourhood. She arouses the interest of Gilbert Markham, a local farmer, and though she tries to repel his growing love for her, his closeness to her young son eventually makes her treat him in a more friendly fashion. The relationship however is hindered by the opposition and ridicule of his family...

  1. I think I would like to read Jane Eyre because it seems like a really interesting story with a lot of elements like mystery and suspense but also very dramatic and I think it's a really interesting plot. I think my second choice would have to be Wuthering Heights because I think the social class difference is a really interesting concept to see especially since things like marrying for money don't happen as often as they had back in those days.

  2. I would like to read Jane Eyre because I think I want to compare this book to Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice because both I feel like their lives are somewhat similar and I think it would be interesting to look at the parallels between the two. My second choice would be Wuthering Heights because I think it would be interesting to see how love stories were written back then in contrast to how they are now and because I think the storyline is very similar to Romeo and Juliet.

  3. I’m planning on reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, by Anne Bronte, because I think her story is unique compared to the other novels that her sisters wrote. Stories during the time period never really showed independent women who would stick up for themselves. During Victorian times people became more literate and people started to realise that there was lots of money that could be made in writing novels. Obviously the Bronte sisters realised this and started writing novels themselves. If I don’t end up reading The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, I’d be happy to read Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte. The entry read in class really peaked my interest.

  4. The book that I want to read is The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I was looking up the summaries for then and out of the three of them, it seemed the most intriguing to me. I also want to read it because it is the only book out of the three of them that I know the least about so I’m curious to know more. To me, when you think of the Bronte sister's books, you think of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre so if this is her great book then I would like to know more about it.

  5. The novel that I believe I will find the most excitement in reading out of the three options is the novel by Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights. After looking into the summary of the novel and viewing the movie trailer I saw some aspects of the story which could turn out to be very interesting to read into. For example, Ellen Dean may reveal some secrets or information about both families in the novel that may cause the plot to thicken with drama, tension, and other types of problems. If it turns out that Wuthering Heights is not an option, I’d like to read Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Bronte because the idea of a women during this time period being thrown out into the world to fend for herself and survive seems to be a very adventurous plot as well as a very powerful character development from the main character. So, Jane Eyre looks to me as if it would be a reliable second choice.

  6. I would like to read Jane Eyre because I have seen the movie version before. At the time, I was a very young girl so I could not understand the lines in the movie well. Therefore, I want to read Charlotte's original book, after all, the film can never reveal the full meaning and state of mind that the original book wants to express. Jane Austen elaborated on women's traditional concepts of marriage in Pride and Prejudice, eager to marry a rich bachelor. This idea still occupies the thinking of most women even in today's society. However, in Jane Eyre, Jane has been striving for self-awareness, unwilling to be restrained, and constantly strives to achieve self-worth for the freedom and equality of marriage.

  7. When I was deciding the novel that I wanted to read, I had trouble deciding between Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. After reading the summaries of both, their stories seem very interesting. Jane Eyre seems very eerie and mysterious, but in the short excerpt Mr. Pellerin read in class, I noticed some humor. I think all of these traits will combine to create a great thriller which is what I will be looking forward to if I read this book. On the other hand, Wuthering Heights looks to be interesting too. I am intrigued to see what the summary means when it mentions “leaving only the ghosts of Catherine and Heathcliff to haunt the moors”. This novel looks to have another suspenseful story. I am very interested in both books, but I would most likely choose Jane Eyre before Wuthering Heights.

  8. I have decided that I would like to read Wuthering heights. after reading the summary and watching the trailer I found many aspects to be very interesting. I believe it would be interesting to hear the unveiling of both families secrets and seeing how the families react now that the secrets are out. I believe this book would be very interesting and drama filled. Jane Eyre was a very close second. If need be I would not mind reading Jane Eyre. i found this book interesting because of the mysterious role that she plays through out the novel. Both books would be very interesting but my top choice is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

  9. Honestly, I'm seriously considering Wuthering Heights. To me, after looking into the summaries of all of the books, Wuthering Heights had the most attractive plot. It seemed as though that the story is somewhat suspenseful from a first glance, and revolves around a lot of tension that occurs from a time before. If I could not get Wuthering Heights, I'd prefer to take Jane Eyre. Personally, the summary of the story felt quite attractive, as it talks about a situation many children are in, orphanage. On top of that, the humor from the small excerpt Mr. Pellerin read was pretty funny, and to me it's my kind of humor. The snarky sort of smart ass humor. My preference order would be 1. Wuthering Heights, 2. Jane Eyre.

  12. The novel I am the most interested in reading is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. At least from the summaries, it seems to have the most interesting plot and it seems to be the darkest of them as well, which I think I'll enjoy. The movie trailer looked good too. My second choice would be Jane Eyre.

My choice would be Wuthering Heights. After looking over all the options Wuthering Heights sounded the most interesting to me. To me the story sounds like it could be very suspenseful and could get me sucked into reading really fast. My second choice would have to be Jane Eyre but I thought that novel sounded very interesting to but I feel Wuthering Heights would be a better read for me.

  15. Out of the three stories that were available I would like to study the story with wuthering heights. Based on the information I was given Wuthering Heights seems to have the most interesting story line and left me wondering what would happen and how the characters would react. If I were not to be able to study Wuthering Heights then my second choice would be Jane eyre as I see lots of mystery in the text and I am interested in how it concludes.
